Transportation in Europe

European Train

A cost effective and convenient way to see Europe is to travel on its massive railway network. Europe has one of the most established railway networks in the world, some of the most breathe taking scenic view of Europe can be seen on some of the ride. Europe's most scenic train ride is the Glacier Express, crossing southern Switzerland from Martigny to Chur. Most of the route is covered by Eurail and Euro passes, except for the $30 Brig-Disentis segment (which is covered by most Swiss passes).
There are a few type of passes for travelling, Eurailpass (17 countries), the Eurail Selectpass (3,4 or 5 countries) Eurail Regional Passes and Single Country passes

Eurailpass (17 countries)

The Eurailpass allows you consecutive-day rail travel for the duration of the pass. Passes are available for 15 day, 21 day, 1 month, 2 month, or 3 month trips.
Eurailpasses permit rail travel in the 17 European countries of the Eurail network: Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Republic of Ireland, Spain, Sweden, and Switzerland.
The Eurailpass is ideal if you are traveling frequently during your trip or you don't want to be limited by budgeting your travel days.

Eurail Selectpass

The Eurail Selectpass lets you choose any 3, 4 or 5 Eurail countries, provided that these are directly connected by a participating Eurail rail company or shipping line. Eurail Selectpass countries include Austria (including Liechtenstein), Benelux*, Bulgaria, Serbia & Montenegro*, Denmark, Finland, France (including Monaco), Germany, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Norway, Portugal, Republic of Ireland, Romania, Slovenia & Croatia*, Spain, Sweden, and Switzerland. This allows you to create your own tailor-made pass to suit your needs. Options include 5, 6, 8 or 10 days of travel within in a 2-month period. If selecting 5 countries there is also the opportunity of choosing 15 travel days.

Eurail Regional Passes

Eurail Regional Passes are ideal for those of you on a short stay in Europe, wanting only to visit a couple of countries. There is currently a selection of nine different Regional Passes available from Eurail, giving you the opportunity to visit a specific area consisting out of two (or in some cases, more) bordering countries.

Single Country passes

Travel within single countries and receive varied travel days to use over either consecutively or over a longer period of time. Best for someone who is staying in a small area of Europe. Each European country offers its own railpass (such as BritRail), usually a good value if you're traveling solely within that country. Rail-and-drive versions give you the convenience of a train for long hauls and the freedom of a car for exploring the countryside.
If you'd rather buy tickets as you go (a.k.a. point-to-point tickets), note that in most countries you can often avoid a time-consuming trip to the station by getting tickets, reservations, supplements, and couchettes (berths on overnight trains) at local travel agencies. Regardless of your age, you can save money and meet more people by traveling second class.
