An archipelago of 118 islands connected by over 400 bridges, Italy's Venice is a city that is uniquely wedded to the sea. Perhaps no other city of the West has so long, and so strongly appealed to the romantic imagination as "la Serenissima", the "most serene" city. With its palaces and cathedrals, its canals and bridges, it appears to float magically on the water. Its vast expanses of buildings and monuments, its gondoliers and chansonniers, its frescoes and glassworks set Venice apart, not just from most cities, but from the contemporary world itself.
