Camera Formats

Camera formats are based on the size of the film frame

Advance Photo System (APS)

The smallest and the newest format luanched in 1996. APS has a film frame size of 17x30mm

35mm

The most popular format and the film size upon which the majority of the camera systems are based. Produces 24x36mm negatives and slides

Medium Formats

There are a range of medium format cameras that use roll film known as 120. The most popular formats are 6x4.5cm (known as 645), 6x6cm (2 1/4 inch square) and 6x7cm. Depending on the camera, you get a different number of frames per roll, ranging from 10 to 15. Medium format cameras offers a considerably larger negative ot transperency than 35mm, an important consideration if very large prints are required.

Panoramic

Available in 35mm and medium format. A true panoramic camera has a format ratio of 1:3 (ie the film is three times as wide as it high) Two 35mm frames side by side would be panoramic. In medium format a 6x12cm panoramic camera give six frames per roll. a 6x17cm panoramic camera produces only four frames per roll, that are almost three times as wide as they are high.
