Taking care of belongings back home
  • Make plans to board your pets, have garden cared for and mail picked up or redirected.
  • Contact a reliable neighbour or friend and let them know that you are gone.
  • Leave keys, itinerary with him. Get his phone number in case you need to call him.
  • Discontinue newspaper, milk and other deliveries until further notice.
  • Set timer of your lights to be on at certain times of the day as well as the timer on your radio. Tune it to a talk show.
  • Ask your neighbours to place their garbage in your place once in a while.
Protection guide
  • Protect your true essentials - passport, air tickets, traveller's cheques, credit cards. Keep them in a moneybelt under clothes.
  • Wear a cheap watch and no jewellery. Keep expensive items at home.
  • Do not discuss plans, accommodation, finances or politics with strangers.
  • Keep the TV on even when you leave the room.
  • Never leave valuables in room.
  • Never patronise unmarked taxis or enter any taxi carrying unfamilliar passengers. Agree on the price and destination first before entering the vehicle.
  • Do not accept food or drink from strangers.
  • Be particularly alert during potentially dangerous times and places.
  • Carry only a photocopy of your passport - the ID, visa and the entry/exit card pages. leave the original in the hotel safe.
  • Divide your money and keep it in separate places. Don't flaunt your money.
  • Do not entertain strangers asking for small currency changes. Your entire wallet may be snatched away.
  • Do not exchange currency with street money changers.
  • To reduce risk of petty crime, walk with an umbrella or a can and avoid dark lanes or short cuts that are less used
